Juläine

Also called: Julaine, Julaine of Sweden, PLLA collagen stimulator.

Juläine at Dr Munroe Clinic is a collagen biostimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid. Injected into the tissue of the face using a cannula technique, it encourages the skin to build its own collagen over the following months, which can gradually improve firmness and support where they have thinned. It does not add volume on the day, and results develop over a course, usually of two to three treatments, four to six weeks apart. Dr Munroe has completed Nordberg Medical's training in Juläine.

what it treats.

Juläine may suit firming around the lower face, the nasolabial folds, around the mouth and jawline, and the neck. As the body gradually breaks the poly-L-lactic acid down, it stimulates the fibroblasts to produce new collagen, so the result is your own tissue rather than product sitting in the face.

Juläine's microspheres are manufactured to a small, uniform size, designed to help them spread evenly and to reduce the clumping that can cause small bumps. No post-treatment massage is needed by the patient.

what it doesn't treat.

Juläine works across areas of volume loss, so it is not the right choice for a single defined hollow, where hyaluronic acid filler gives a more controllable and adjustable result, or for the lips. It does not treat skin texture on its own, which skin regeneration addresses.

the assessment.

Where the product is placed, and how much, determines how evenly new collagen builds. The assessment looks at the pattern of volume loss: diffuse loss across an area may suit a collagen biostimulator, while a hollow or fold may suit filler, and the two are often used in sequence. Juläine is placed in the tissue using a cannula technique and, unlike a filler, does not create a result that would need dissolving; it is gradually broken down by the body as the new collagen forms. Treatment is given in stages, with a review before more is added.

what happens on the day.

Following consultation, the risks and side effects are explained, consent is taken and photographs are taken for the clinical record. The area is marked and cleansed, numbing cream is applied, and the product is injected into the tissues using a cannula technique. Appointments are booked for up to 60 minutes.

recovery.

Some swelling for a few days is usual and can make the face look fuller before it settles. Some people bruise and others do not, and this cannot be predicted in advance.

Avoid saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. There is minimal downtime and most people return straight to their day. Every treatment carries risks, and these are discussed with you before treatment.

results.

There is little to see in the first few weeks, as collagen builds gradually. Most people notice an improvement after their second treatment, continuing over the months after the course is complete. Results tend to last longer than hyaluronic acid filler, and a range for your treatment is given at consultation.

who it isn't for.

Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, where there is active skin infection, or for anyone looking for an immediate or reversible result. A history of keloid or raised scarring is discussed individually.

common questions.

Juläine or Sculptra?

Both are poly-L-lactic acid and work in the same way. Juläine's more uniform particles and the absence of a massage routine make it a straightforward choice for many people, while Sculptra has the longer track record. Dr Munroe recommends one or the other based on the area, the tissue and how you would like to approach the course.

Does Juläine need to be dissolved?

No. Juläine is a collagen biostimulator, not a hyaluronic acid filler, so it is not designed to be dissolved or reversed. The PLLA microspheres gradually break down within the body while stimulating your own collagen production, meaning the result develops progressively rather than relying on a permanent deposit of product.

Temporary swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur after treatment, and less common complications will be discussed fully during your consultation.

How many treatments are needed?

Usually two to three, four to six weeks apart, with the exact number depending on the area and the degree of volume loss. This is set at consultation and reviewed as the course progresses.
